It's time to dust off the blog and take the time to share new pieces on my website, some of my new ideas, and daily, maybe I should say weekly, reflections. I plan on making several new items this year, weeding out older items, and focusing more on jewelry listings that have been very popular on my website.
Did you have butterflies or were you completely at ease?

My special day was August 9, 1980. The sun was shining, the weather was perfect, and my butterflies were the size of giant birds! I knew that I had found the perfect person, my soulmate, and that everything had been well thought out, but I was so nervous that all the details wouldn't come together.

I attempted to eat breakfast that morning; my mother had made her wonderful homemade banana bread, but for once, I couldn't eat any. It just kind of got stuck somewhere between my throat and my stomach. I sat there with my parents, and it hit me that this would be the last time that I would share this special time with them. I think that they were feeling the same because the conversation was not flowing as it always had before. I was the first one of their children to get married and as I now know the feeling, they realized that things were going to be different; still special but different.

I remember getting dressed, having pictures taken, the drive to church, the walk down the aisle with both parents, and then staring into the eyes of the person that I had totally fallen in love with and wanted to spend the rest of my life with. The ceremony went off without a hitch and then we were having more pictures taken, walking into the reception as a newly married couple, having our first dance, sharing a father/daughter dance with my father, and throwing the bouquet. The day went by so quickly and before we knew it, we were heading off on our honeymoon to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Well now, there is a special day being planned for another special couple, Matt and Audra! They are friends of my son and daughter in law and we have come to know them quite well. Awhile back, Audra asked if I would make the jewelry for her wedding and I was so touched and honored to be a part of their special day. She had decided on a vintage wedding and wanted jewelry that had a vintage feel to it in a dusty rose color with antique brass components. She also wanted the necklaces to have similiar components but each one to be a little different to match the three similar but lovely, each a different style, vintage dresses that she had chosen for her bridesmaids.

I love a challenge and this one really appealed to me. I began the hunt for the right color pink and cream pearls and antique brass pieces. I made up one demo and sent a couple of pictures to Audra to see what she thought of it. By the time I had talked to her about it, I had already decided to make a slight change to it, she agreed, and I remade necklace #1.

The hunt was then on to make necklace #2. I had found a beautiful pink crystal rhinestone brooch on Etsy and sent her a picture to see what she thought. She loved it; I bought it, and once it arrived, began making the second, different but similiar necklace.

Now the pressure was on, two necklaces done and one to go. I hit a designer's block, which I am assuming compares to a writer's block.

Audra, being very familiar with Etsy as she and her future husband have an Etsy website, who had been searching for necklaces that she thought were pretty and in her color choices, sent me a link for a necklace that had a lovely resin rose as the focal point. Now knowing more of what Audra liked in jewelry, I got searching for the perfect rose from one of my favorite Etsy supply sites. Once that arrived, the rest was easy. The necklace kind of put itself together at that point, if that makes any sense and necklace #3 was complete. The next step is to make matching earrings for these necklaces, a necklace and earring set for the mother of the bride, and Audra's jewelry!

I love a challenge and a happy story!

Stay tuned for another blog posting when the final pieces are done!

Nancy

I feel bad that I've been so negligent but I've just gone through that time of year again, the time that I have come to dread the most - year end in accounting.....

By day, I work in an accounting department of a local paper company. By night and weekends , I make jewelry; when I'm not exhausted from the day job! January is usually a blur for us in the accounting field with forms, calculations, and explanations to auditors, owers, etc. This year end was no exception and I'm glad to say that it is behind us!!

I'm gearing up for a new semester of jewelry classes, so I have been busy designing and making up the class projects. We have a full class again, which is very thrilling. It means that I haven't scared everyone off in past classes and I've "hooked" several into the addiction of jewelry making!

I've also been adding new pieces to my Etsy website and have plans for additional pieces still churning around in my head.

Right before Christmas, I had a wonderful interview by Carmen Merry from a small local paper, The Townline. We had met at the Etsy craft fair in December and she wanted to do a story on some local crafters and asked if I would be interested. She was so pleasant and immediately put me at ease during the interview. Those of you that know me, know that if I am comfortable with the subject matter, I can be quite chatty - lol! The interview went by rather quickly and we crammed alot of information into 90 minutes!

Here is that interview!

Crafting Jewelry: All Strung Out

For Nancy Desrosiers of Winslow, what began as a stress relieving past-time has grown into an enterprise which is financially, socially, and emotionally rewarding. She is the owner of an Etsy online company called All Strung Out1: Handcrafted Jewelry by Nancy.

A full-time employee at Madison Paper in the accounting department, Desrosiers originally began crafting jewelry 7 years ago as a fun and healthy way to deal with job stress from accounting. She soon began offering workshops and jewelry parties and became a teacher at Winslow Adult Education.

She has been teaching jewelry making every semester since then and has a core group of 6 or 7 students that keep returning to learn more skills and enjoy fun and laughs. This motivates her all the more to pour through magazines to stay current with the latest tools and techniques.

Desrosiers also welcomes new students each semester, including the occasional gentleman. Classes run about two hours and usually end each week with a finished product. She said it is a great way to take up a new hobby, get a loved one out to increase socialization, or meet new friends. Her next semester begins February 15.

She said of her students, “By the third week, if they’ve gone out and bought their tools, I know they’re hooked!…It’s a sickness - but I figure there are worse things you could be addicted to!”

Some of her own work has been on consignment at a clothing shop and at local beauty shops. She was starting to accumulate quite a lot of jewelry so she decided to start a website a year ago. She had heard of “Etsy” as an affordable way to begin. Etsy has a set of instructions on how to get started, and, said Desrosiers, “This is the way to go if you want to test the waters without a huge investment.”

In addition to the obvious financial benefit, she said it is very satisfying to meet people from all over the country and the world with a common interest. One of the things she finds most rewarding about her business is making friends and memories.

In addition to a full line of nature inspired jewelry, Desrosiers has specialized in custom orders. She has four types of jewelry which are especially life affirming.

The first are her “peapod” earrings and necklaces. These can signify the number of children a mother has or can signify a couple as “two peas in a pod.” The number of peas can be from one to five, and a dangle of stones can be added to signify birth months as well as a charm added to indicate “Mom” or “xoxo.”

The second type is the “birdnest” necklaces. Similar to above, these can signify the number and birth months of a mother’s children as well as her favorite color. Additionally, an “empty nest” necklace is available with a “celebrate” charm.

She also makes personalized baby bracelets to celebrate new births.

Finally, comes an original design by Desrosiers which she calls the “Positive Energy” bracelet. She designed this for 3 friends who were all diagnosed with different types of cancer at the same time. The stones are the colors of the 7 chakras of the body, and there are four charms for love, laugher, faith, and courage. Along with the bracelet comes an informative page explaining the significance of the colors and the reasons for the charms.

Her designs are especially made to reflect the recipient’s taste and favorite things, such as colors or stones or something that has meaning for them. Said Desrosiers, “I want my pieces to have meaning, not just to be another piece of jewelry.”

She does other custom orders, including jewelry for wedding parties. The husband of a friend and co-worker has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and been dealing with the whole scariness of the news, the game plan, and the awful side effects of the chemo treatments. To help with some of the costs that they have incurred, my co-workers will be at the craft fair selling food, drinks, and raffle tickets. All proceeds will assist with the addtional costs for his treatments. So come to the fair with an empty stomach because there will be plenty of goodies for breakfast, lunch, and snacks!

1. I dusted it off and decided to write about my new fall jewelry classes, seeing that we've already had four of them!

This fall's semester compared to last years in the number of people that signed up for the class. We had 20 people initially sign up for the class, forcing me to sign up to teach another night, offering the same projects both nights. Like it was a sacrifice!!

It has been hectic as usual but I still enjoy it. The ladies, and this semester, one man, are fun and I enjoy watching some of them fall prey to the harmless but addictive obsession known as jewelry making! They are always hesitant at first if they have never done it before, but halfway through, they really start to enjoy it and love it when they actually finish a piece the night of class and can show it off the next day.

In this weeks classes, some of them were actually planning what they were going to wear the next day that would truly show off their latest creation! This weeks creation was the Autumn Jasper Lariat Necklace, done in true falls colors from the gemstones, to the Swarovski crystals and the copper leaf accents throughout the piece. They learned a new technique at the same time with the attached digital image behind glass pendant.

The third week was devoted to working with jump rings and links to create this lovely Metal Mania Necklace and matching earrings or bracelet in copper, brass, and silver pewter triangle links and two kinds of chain.

Week two involved making this Positive Energy Bracelet, which has special meaning to me. It has wire wrapped links using Swarovski crystals in the colors of the seven chakras and charms with special messages.

In the very first week, I alway's like to start with basic stringing and crimping; essential in most jewelry projects. Where the vintage look is really big this fall, I decided to add a little twist to the project by bending a lovely vintage filigree piece over the front of the Crazy Horse Stone Pendant. I love the end result. I decided to accent the grey and mauve gemstones with Swarovski Bordeaux pearls, which made the necklace pop with their gorgeous, dark red color. Several of the ladies made matching earrings, because we all know that "it's all about the set"!!

Next week, we will be having fun and relieving stress with some hammering and stamping!

Stay tuned!
Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-66071010492109284542010-07-18T09:40:00.012-04:002010-07-18T10:51:45.862-04:00The Miracle of Life

God was at work again this week with one of his many miracles. This lovely child, Haven, was born on Friday to two wonderful people; my son, Adam and my daughter in law, Amber. She weighed 6 lbs, 12.6 oz and was 19 1/2 inches in length; a picture of perfection. She arrived 9 days early, much to our delight, after 13 hours of steady labor.

I thought that the experience of having my own children had to be the greatest moment in my life. I found out that the arrival of my 1st grandchild also fit into that category! I think I was more nervous this time around than when I was experiencing childbirth myself. I remembered, even though it has been almost 25 years since I delivered a baby, the process quite vividly. I kept getting these flashbacks of the painful contractions, the pushing, blowing out those non-existent candles when you weren't supposed to push, the exhausted feeling when you think you can't possibly push anymore, the excitement when the head and shoulders finally surfaced, and the unbelievable moment when you stare into that precious little face for the very first time.

The process seemed to be moving at a normal pace up until the pushing began and then Amber pushed for over two hours. She had insisted that she didn't want any pain medication during the delivery and she succeeded. I had told her that way back in the old days, when I had my babies, we weren't even given that option. Times have changed, but being a strong believer in all things natural, Amber wanted to deliver her baby the same way. There was a hint from her doctor that if the baby wasn't moving any further within the next 15 minutes, she would have to give her something to help her finish. That was all the incentive that Amber needed and she found the strength to give a few more successful pushes.

When we heard the music playing over the loudspeaker that indicated a new baby had been born, we went crazy! I couldn't control the happy tears that started and they surfaced once again when my son Adam came out to share the first pictures of his new little girl that had just been born on his birthday! I could see the pride on his face, both in what he had just experienced with his wife and in the greatest gift that they had just been given.

I've been to see Haven several times since then and she is coming home today! We have been dog-sitting for our granddog, Ella, who can't wait to see them and meet her "little sister"!! Adam brought over a baby blanket yesterday that smells like Haven for Ella to get used to so that the first meeting of the two goes well. I had a talk with Ella this morning and explained her important role in Haven't life as friend and protector. I think she got it because I proceeded to get a huge slobbery tongue lick afterwards.

I had a talk with Haven yesterday while holding her at the hospital. I introduced myself as she opened her eyes and listened to my voice, like she was really trying to understand who I was and what my role was in her life; she seems to be very smart already!! (I will try and not be as braggy in my future "Haven" posts, but I can't promise it - lol). I told her that I have alot of plans for the two of us in the future and how I plan on teaching her how to make all kinds of wonderful things like my grandmother had done with me. She seemed quite interested until her little belly reminded her that it was time to eat once again and I wasn't the one who was going to be able to fulfill that need!!

I can't wait for her to arrive at her new home and check out her beautiful bedroom! She is in for a wonderful life and Adam and Amber are in for a wonderful experience in theirs!

Here is a lovely little saying that I had seen once that says it all!

Before you were conceived, I wanted you.

Before you were born, I loved you.

Before you were here an hour, I would die for you.

This Is The Miracle Of Life!

Memere

Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-24899099764302918832010-06-28T19:17:00.000-04:002010-06-28T19:19:00.892-04:00Summer & Beach Theme Contest - Cast Your Vote - Win A Prize!!Come cast your VOTE!!! It's because of the reminder that my Mother and Father are no longer physically with me. Mentally, they are around constantly in the faces of my children, relatives, and in my wonderful memories of them. My Mom passed away 2 1/2 years ago and my Dad has been gone for 14 years. Not a day goes by when a memory of them isn't triggered by something going on in my life or something will happen and I just want to rush over to talk to them about it. And then I remember....

I look with envy at other people's family gatherings that include multiple generations and remember how that used to be the way it was in my family on many occasions. We still get together now but with some family members living so far away, it isn't as often as I would like. How I'd like to go back in time every now and then but I know that it wouldn't be enough just to see them again for only a day.

I treasure the memories of those times, though and am so grateful that we did have them. My Dad was the guy with the accordion wallet who would ask if someone wanted to see his family and all the different folds would open up. He would need a huge wallet now to hold pictures of all his children and 17 grandchildren! And now, there is a great grandchild on the way, and a step great grandchild that I still haven't even met yet! How thrilled he would be. He was one proud Dad!! Mom kept up his legacy after Dad passed away and would tell everyone about her children and grandchildren. Still today, we run into friends of my parents and they ask about all of us and can pretty much name spouses and children. It's funny and touching at the same time!

For those of you who still have your parents with you, enjoy every moment with them and make your own special memories. You will look back fondly on those memories some day and they will get you through many tough times.

Fathers Day: Roses grow in Heaven, Lord, pick a bunch for me---Place them in my Dad's arms and tell him they're from me---Tell him that I love and miss him and when he turns to smile--place a kiss upon his cheek and hold him for a while--Because remembering him is easy--I do it everyday-- There's an ache ...within my heart that will.....never go away!!!

Love you and miss you Dad!

NancyNancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-81163441436761738142010-05-16T05:54:00.005-04:002010-05-17T20:04:48.045-04:00Ladies Night Out - Spring Session
A whole month has gone by without any blog postings. How quickly the time passes. I managed to squeeze in some surgery in between the semesters and have recovered nicely. Couldn't disrupt the jewelry classes!! Here is a picture of the Winter Class and all but two ladies from that class are in the Spring Class along with some other returnees!

We finished the Winter Session of jewelry classes with the Lily of The Valley Necklace, which turned out lovely for all and the Ladies Choice class, with many different projects all being done at the same time. Usually that class has me running back and forth, but that week went pretty smoothly. We are now more than half way through the spring session. Nine of my "regular addicts" have returned for the spring session and we have picked up a new recruit, Alicia.

The very first week, I was warning Alicia about this group, how we laugh, joke, and tease with each other, and how she would have to be able to hold her own. One lady mentioned to her that she was our new student this semester and when Alicia asked what had happened to the new student from last semester, I knew she would fit in just fine! By the end of the evening she was adding her own humor to the mix!

We have made three projects so far, with very minimal whining! I've been greatly surprised. We started off with a lovely copper bracelet in a right angle weave. Most of the bracelets were completed by the end of the class and the ladies moved into designing their own matching earrings. I had thrown one earring together just before class and got some friendly criticism that there was only one completed earring. We got about three different designs that evening for earrings and it was great that they were feeling comfortable enough to venture out into the design direction.

For our 2nd week, they got a bit of a break. We made a cute Hummingbird Bracelet and matching earrings but they got both projects done in a short period of time. The project isn't that difficult and they all left with a finished set. Many of them hung around after class for awhile just to visit and talk with each other.

Last week made up for the short week before. We made the Summer Hues necklace, pin, and earrings set and it went well over into the NCIS time space. Now, not only do I have to design or decide on a project, keep it at a reasonable cost, and make sure it doesn't take too long to complete, I also have to make sure that we are done in time so that they can get home and watch NCIS. There is "no pressure" in this class!! That's what I keep telling myself.

I knew that this last project would take awhile to complete because of all the stringing involved and the small holes on the gemstone chips, so I actually brought a kit for me to work on in class. Usually I don't bother because I am usually back and forth answering questions or demonstrating techniques, but that night I got quite a bit of the way through another necklace in the same pattern but different colors. It was noticed by one of the ladies, who wanted to mark it on the calendar!

Most of the ladies were really focused on stringing the little chips onto the wire and it was pretty quiet on one end of the tables. The other end, however, was on the chatty side and where several of them are in the medical field, chose to share some of their "dead people" stores that they had encountered in their careers. It made for an interesting but unique conversation while beading! It was another first!

This week's project is the Tree of Life pendant and I think they are a little nervous. They thought it was very pretty, but were not sure if they could handle this new technique. They are going to give it a try on Tuesday and some have chosen different colors for the leaves. I'm anxious to see the variety of trees that will be created.

Stay Tuned!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-5841762688758352652010-03-14T12:50:00.005-04:002010-03-14T13:17:49.239-04:00Ladies Night Out - Week 4 - Tennis Anyone??

It's a dreary day today but not as bad here as in many other locations; so I am not complaining. It's not snowing, no floods to speak of, and no tornadoes. The weather has been so inconsistent in so many locations this winter; it makes you wonder at the changes occuring all over the country.

I have Bette Midler playing in the background - I love her voice and songs! I feel like getting up and dancing around the kitchen - who would know??? As usual I digress!

These are the lovely pieces that we made last week in class! This is the class that I had swapped with the Lily Necklace and had to call everyone to get their crystal choice... It took several hours on the computer to make sure that I ordered all the right components. There were all kinds of crystal colors picked and they all came out so lovely. The ladies were commenting as they left that they finally had a finished piece to show off. Some of them are re-doing some of the previous classes because they are getting quite picky on the finishing of their jewelry - I've taught them well!

It was a quiet class last week and I mentioned this to the ladies. I told them that they weren't giving me much to write about for my blog post!! They were all so intent on stringing the crystal sliders and silver beads and in some cases, redesigning the bracelet to fit their individual wrist sizes. Some of them also redesigned their earrings, which I'm glad to see that they have the confidence now after taking many classes to begin the designing process.

We have already completed four weeks - boy how the time does fly by! This coming week is the Lily of the Valley necklace and then the last week is Ladies' Choice. That last week is usually a little on the stressful side because quite often they all choose something different to make and I'm back and forth quite a bit. I should really wear roller skates for the last class but I'm afraid that I would break my neck!

Stay tuned!!

Have a great week!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-73482966100619464372010-03-07T14:52:00.006-05:002010-03-07T15:23:07.109-05:00Ladies Night Out - Week 3 - The Herringbone Technique<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim3-e46t2dd5tAGw6rUkkhN4oYhPLkHE3J0R_LcBkjanMK4HeLu1LY3_-4TfyN41vQQwMIz5oNNU6Dm2tmr3GcoDXczJjETs3mHw_c-xUvrSMJeCZaFjPU1DQADl-C2d8DI_D9nlPVGT8/s200/100_0807.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445982505836544930" />

Wow, two blog posts on the same day!! Trying to get caught up!

This class wasn't as stressful as the previous class, at least for me, thank goodness! This was another new technique; this one I had never done before. I had been thinking of trying this technique for awhile after seeing the instructions for the technique on a bead site that I frequent and decided that it would be this semester.

I have to turn the project list in to the school quite a ways in advance of the actual classes and sometimes it is difficult to come up with new projects. Where I have a group of 7 or 8 ladies that keep coming back to the class, I have to come up with new ideas, which isn't a bad thing. I have this mental list going of jewelry pieces or techniques that I have seen and would like to make and come back to it when I am compiling the list of potential projects for upcoming semesters.

Making the demo for this class was pretty uneventful. The instructions were easy to follow. Given the fact that working with wire is stressful for some of the ladies, I decided to design a bracelet with just a few herringbone links and then connecting them with these cute silver swirls. This way, they could practice the technique a few times, perfecting it as they repeated it and get the bracelet made quite easily after.

A comment was made in the class that "Nancy likes working with wire". I do like working with wire, so it wasn't an untrue statement. I did remind the ladies, though, in fun, that they were paying for a class to learn different techniques and that was what I was trying to do. I asked them if they wouldn't get bored just stringing beads on wire and crimping them; they've already learned that technique and do that at home. I just got alot of smiles in response - they are there for the socializing and the jewelry is just a perk - who am I kidding!! No, many of them actually make up some of the designs we make in class as gifts later on when they can do it in the comfort of their own homes and at their own pace.

I enjoy teaching so much more than I ever thought I would and the ladies that keep coming back are such a fun group! I also do it for the socializing and would miss it if the program was ever dropped from the school.

I like watching the new ladies come in to the class, hesitant at first, but by the third week, with their own little cases of beads or tools. I just chuckle and say - addicting isn't it???Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-71642323430143852982010-03-07T14:02:00.006-05:002010-03-07T14:51:45.650-05:00Ladies Night Out - Week 2 - Knotted Pearl Necklace<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJUDt6ZdUQhV0vZeTAscvobaIdM98tEt1TJTFF3GixLQNkpl3yK-m55Ezd2P37iaKQ0COXFRFoHtVevyJJyD5I4WmYN_6hiyUQehROtWeibWqlROa-nHIoK0K01YkpjSGUa25EqBgEsrA/s200/100_0763.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445969995152881154" />
This semester of jewelry making is just flying by! We are on week four already and are having alot of fun. Granted, there is some whining going on, but I think I would be disappointed if I didn't hear any anticipated whining from my "regular" whiners!! It is all in fun. We spend most of our class time laughing at jokes. One comment by one of the ladies and it is turned into some joke with hidden undertones.

As usual, I get sidetracked.... Week two wasn't without some stress both prior to the class and during the class. The project for the class was pearl knotting with some lovely freshwater pearls. I had only done this technique myself a few years ago, so it was a refresher for me as well. I had purchased a beautiful strand of kelly green freshwater pearls from The Beadin Path; talked my husband into yet another trip to Freeport!

Once home, I proceeded to take out the nylon cord, which has an attached needle on one end, and not even reading my own instructions, eyeballed what I thought was the correct length of thread to use for an eighteen inch necklace and began the knotting process. You see, the technique for a strand of pearls is to have this evenly spaced knot in between each lovely pearl. I was moving along, the knots weren't looking too bad but I was struggling some with making sure that they were just touching the pearl, when I suddenly ran out of cord on the end with the needle. I thought I would add a few more pearls on the opposite end that I had started on but quickly found out that you can't thread the pearl with the cord without a needle - it frays...

Of course, this was just a few days before the actual class, so I began trying to come up with Plan B; maybe only make a necklace for a little girl, cut off the pearls and restart with some other green beading thread that I had in my jewelry stash, or wait until I could get to Freeport again on the weekend and get more of the nylon cord and do it right this time. I decided to try with the thread from my stash and cut all the pearls off the original cord to begin again.

This new thread was much thinner and it required two knots after each pearl. I got about halfway done and really looked at it. I didn't like the way it was coming out and if it doesn't meet my specs, it isn't going to cut it for class or my website. I'm very picky that way. I decided that I would leave it alone for class and bring it in the way it was.

I started the class with a new approach - I explained to them that I had an unfinished demo with me and it was because I had done everything wrong that could possibly be done in pearl knotting so that I could teach them how to do it correctly. I was trying to save them the aggrevation. They didn't bye it and seemed nervous about starting. Once they got going, "the correct way", most of them were getting the hang of it. A few struggled with it and want to remake theirs. I guess if I can do it multiple times, so can they! One of the new ladies, who shall remain nameless, seemed so stressed by the time she left the class. I joked with her that she needed to go home and have a cigarette but she informed me that she doesn't smoke and she gave up wine for lent - so she was really stuck!

I did make it to Freeport the following day, got some more green cord, and finished the necklace. I was pleased with the results and it made it to my website!!

Isn't the expression - Third Time's The Charm!!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-59908644273626632932010-02-21T09:38:00.004-05:002010-02-21T11:36:14.338-05:00Ladies Night Out - Week 1 - Raspberry Swirl Necklace<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH35onAQkamAQV5rRQXzx1diKa9JdLmGvBDGpyXS5zvfrUyKW5noTN-Sm_K30MN2o8n47GXnZOkVPI4SlgGayBHi3z0BZw8_VnapU-myh8-kpKUgaHh1k0UdeeDqbrA52WQ37wJydIICs/s200/100_0635.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440735925559365186" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrZr7PUbRE1GwUkO0vTwAbWzqGXiUi_YGx4ab-_CRNOz8W-2RNd_ffpzQvk66JOZKgx-ln1kQIHcA7y7Py5Qsht28VBy94IhSXS6RDoxbWqVizjJoejibYzWRYzNRUIiCAz-9ppFKhZgk/s200/100_0629.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440735931038443410" />

Classes have started once again for the Winter semester of the "Ladies Night Out" Group at Winslow High School. We got together a week ago and had the pleasure of welcoming four new ladies to our fun little group! There are twelve of us, thirteen counting me, trudging out for two hours on Tuesday evenings to share our passion for jewelry making!

It was fun getting caught up on each others activities over the holidays and it didn't take long for the new members to see that the back and forth teasing amongst us is all done in fun and affection for each other. By the end of the evening, they were jumping in with their own comments and seemed to feel comfortable with the group.

Our first project was this lovely Raspberry Swirl Necklace and some of them made matching earrings. It is all about the "sets" with some of the ladies, myself included!! It was a pretty simple technique and they learned the tricks and hints around successful crimping. It is a very important technique in jewelry making as it holds the entire piece together and if not done correctly, could result in a mad dash around the room hurrying to collect bouncing beads!

We've had a week off due to school vacation but will be back at it this Tuesday evening, making a Knotted Pearl Necklace!

Stay Tuned!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-56848469471013282182010-01-24T18:05:00.009-05:002010-01-24T20:22:52.818-05:00Wish Upon A Star Bracelets - For Ladies With Addictions!!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnkTXoYPkJsovuHsBCw4MvsZTp4JHEb3JEDj0M_iqD6Mft4VzcqOjUCPHAlZ9dqWz3Dc9liO1h7g_LwJv64yzJDtPrHIQkFd4uZOxXEaJESVOin18n-knDkL_pQB2j4anZNE8fqY0KV4U/s200/100_0603.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430478214606285922" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjznd8PewG2BxGs0gip7mxF6ViRwdpa1Y6W1LONBtVoeUWE0RVTd7nkwWYYivLflnMp23VaCAjeJW7DA4IYxuVM-Ny0XIzjRJ858XO1Sucn8d4X1z-ZoXneWwqlsHwav99txx5As5Imrwg/s200/100_0598.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430478215806591634" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQftaANvfmb2JKzdVvy0785RFjWuyU_JSXnHEjs5vl87kwDX-1ZDvIyEB7O0YraIAyGQZljg2YLmwvc-qo79UkmXssWryjfxZANi6uOdRLXI7KpzwRbGTgC8HYgnFVZlivJAlDo47rIlg/s200/100_0591.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430478209209623698" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUwSvg1JJE-gbPT8kIM4Ne0xDgPX2JZSqdXIphC5jqMnBVD5WDR_n5Gdu0weWCHl0ptUkgRqiqaPgbwYkvE5q_LK9ZF-bXV1y-M8HkTbhV69xCQq4VM3rF9aiUzMNs5_yipZONgDWmCVM/s200/100_0589.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430478201748245234" />
I thought it was time that I post something in my blog - it's been way too long! It's been a crazy month in my day job, as I knew it would be. I dislike (that's being nice) the month of January because of all the special requests for reports, auditors, and reporting to our owners in their special reporting format. We are finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel even though it still is quite a distance away. We'll finish up just in time to begin the fun all over again in a new month!

As usual, I get side tracked - the reason for my post!!!

Do you have a purse addiction, a shoe addiction, do not take enough "me" time for starters? These cute little charm bracelets are designed with you in mind!! As a child, and even now sometimes just in case it truly does work, I used to look up at the first star in the night sky and say the following:

Star Light,
Star Bright,
First Star I See Tonight.
I Wish I May,
I Wish I Might,
Get The Wish I Wish Tonight!

Have you ever done that? Well, let me introduce you to the Make A Wish Bracelets! They all have a star charm on the extender that is to be used to make your wishes!!

I Wish I Had More Purses is for the lady that can't step into a famous purse store without hyperventilating and won't leave the store without making a purchase of some kind. This bracelet is to warn anyone around her that she breaks for purse stores!!

I Wish I Owned A Shoe Store is for the lady with all those fancy schmancy name brand high heel shoes that you absolutely can't walk in without pinching your toes. Also for that pile of shoes in the closet that go with every article of clothing she owns.

I Wish I Had More Time For Tea is for the lady that doesn't get enough "ME" time during the week. This bracelet is to remind her that she needs to take time to drink tea and relax; life is stressful enough and things will wait.

I Wish Everyone Could Find Mr. Right is for a variety of ladies - the matchmaker who is always trying to fix up a friend with the perfect guy; the bride to be who wants everyone to be as happy as she is; and the lady who has been with the perfect guy for almost 30 years and wish everyone could find a guy like him!

I Wish For A Healthy Bundle Of Joy is for the mom to be, who is expecting her first, second, or even fourth child. It is also for the lady who wish she could grow beautiful flowers and delicious vegetables instead of weeds!

I Wish I Could Live By The Ocean is for the lady who dreams of summers spent at the beach with the scents, the sounds, and the relaxing waves gently lulling her to sleep at night.

I Wish I Could Find Something To Wear is for the lady who has clothes of all sizes in her closet that just can't seem to find the right outfit. Once a year my husband and I team up to make tourtiere pies; a family favorite tradition! We have now been doing this for almost 30 years. I think we only skipped one year. This recipe is one that my Grandmother Begin handed down to my mother, who handed it down to me. It most likely had been handed down to her previously, so it has been in the family for a long time.

There are many variations of tourtiere pie, but this is ours:

1 - 10 lb. bag of potatoes
1 piece of clear pork - approx. 4lbs
1 piece of clear beef - approx. 4lbs
1 medium size onion
salt & pepper
poultry seasoning
4 to 5 pre-made pie crusts or homemade if you desire

Put the meats, onion, salt and pepper in large deep kettle. Add water to cover and bring to boil. Let boil for 3 hours.

Remove meat to a plate for cooling. Save the water. Peel the bag of potatoes, rinse, and add to the water. Bring potatoes to a boil and boil until tender - when you can easily stick a fork in them.

Once the meat has cooled, run it through a meat grinder into a large roasting pan. Remove the potatoes from the water and place them in the roasting pan on top of the ground meat. Mash them with a potato masher until all lumps are gone. Add some of the water, salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning. Keep adding a little bit of the water and poultry seasoning until it is more of a sticky consistency - not runny, but not dry either. You got that??? I usually have to use most of the water, a couple of hits of salt and pepper and maybe two to three good hits of the poultry seasoning, if that helps!

In the day, my grandmother and mother used to make their own pie crusts. I have let them down in this area. We use the "just roll out" pie crusts by Pillsbury. It is so much faster and still tastes good.

Roll out your crusts, place the bottom crust in your pie plate, add pie filling to the top and add the top crust. Make sure to put a little bit of fresh water around the rim of your bottom crust so that the top crust sticks really well to it. Make a fancy fluted edge and bake according to the crust directions.

It takes two people - one or both to get everything cooked and the pies made and one to be the 2nd taste tester!! I love this job!

We always try one pie the night we are making them - just to make sure that they are safe to eat - lol.

When cooled, wrap in foil and freeze until you are ready for Christmas. We usually defrost them the day before Christmas in the refrigerator, leaving the foil on, and then reheat at 350 degrees for 1-1/2 hours on Christmas morning.

We usually serve them with prime rib, some sort of coleslaw, cranberry sauce, olives, pickles, turnip, rolls, & stuffed celery. Of course that doesn't count the tradional cheese ball with crackers, the shrimp with cocktail sauce, the bacon wrapped scallops, the spinach dip, or the vegetable platter. Let's not even get going on dessert..... Of course, at peak, we are a group of almost 30 people. That number has dwindled over the years due to everyone's schedules and distances. This year we will be 15 for dinner.

I hope if you get to try this SECRET FAMILY RECIPE that you enjoy it as much as we do! Send me comments if you do try it!!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-47270152443027515992009-11-15T13:59:00.001-05:002009-11-15T14:02:36.564-05:00HOLIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE

Are you one of those ambitious types that gets your holiday shopping done way in advance of the Christmas season? This last week I lovingly refer to as Ladies Choice!! The ladies love it because they get to finish up projects from the semester that they might not have finished in class or missed the class, bring something from home to work on, or make a selection from the extensive collection of handmade jewelry from my website! I always dread this week because I run around the room like a chicken with my head cut off answering questions and helping with various techniques!

This week was no different. I thought I would do my civic part and go vote before my Tuesday night class. Little did I know how long that process would take until I was still standing in line to vote with 15 minutes left to get to class. This must have been one of the biggest turnouts this year and the lines were huge. You actually had to get in a line to get a number and have your name checked off to qualify to get into the actual line to vote... I've never seen it quite so confusing.

So, of course, I arrived late to class and everyone was waiting for me. I brought everything but the kitchen sink because there were several projects that would be going on at the same time and I wanted to be prepared for anything. It took two trips to the car to get everything in. I started handing out kits and instructions to those who had ordered them and then immediately started jumping from person to person to see what they needed for instruction or assistance. I should actually bring roller skates because in the Tuesday night class, they are scattered around the room, but I was a wall hugger in my roller skating days, so it wouldn't do me much good...

The common project was that they received their fired silver clay pieces and began to brush off the clay residue with a wire brush and then started the oxidizing process using liver of sulphur. That was followed by more brushing and polishing with a special cloth. It was a stinky process but the results were great! The ladies seemed happy with the finished silver pendants and were each stating what they would have done different the next time.

The next 6 week semester doesn't start until February, but I actually got approved to hold 3 more classes before Christmas to make Christmas themed items. We won't have such a large group this time but we will have a good time as usual and I'll post pictures of our lovely Christmas items. Now to get the demo's made......

Stay tuned!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-55909748534938672152009-11-01T19:12:00.006-05:002009-11-01T19:54:59.370-05:00Ladie's Night Out - Week 5 - Wire Wrapped Pendants><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 159px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0lE5IPMCi58Ni_w-COY23klZCd6e_wYj1idOoaumMS0FowQysgj38CkOg7auJ3qZKguiLOHizBqhd6fddT-_PDq7hB5CrDerKmjq4sRPCau__fkO_QwMHMGbV-6Yzc5qWnVv-edVzdI/s200/100_1208.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399294145792552338" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 104px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqZ095dAUG9mVG-GA_3-kI7YsEfKSjDjCXbFweAv-4i3lHx0uZnFxvhW34IBR0AKUjsKB1g-4L_FOgTf8t9YLwKK-djKUeQ0o870a4pRSxALpiXk-SwspsTCPzTFVb6CZzKZ4ivQZzGfY/s200/100_1201.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399294157303226546" /></a

Another fun evening with the ladies!! We actually had a man join our Wednesday night class. He had contacted me a few weeks ago inquiring about wire wrapping and taking a class. I mentioned to him that we were going to be doing wire wrapping this past week and if he was brave enough to attend the class with nine women, then he was welcome to join us. This is something that he said that he has always wanted to learn and would like to do it as a side business. He seemed to enjoy himself and caught on quite well.

The sea glass for the first pendant was supplied by Laura, who has been a regular for a little while. She collects it every summer on a private beach in Pemaquid. She had some beautiful pieces and the ladies selected their base pieces and then glued smaller sea glass in various colors along with shells to the base piece. The seaglass pendant pictured actually was a gift for my mother in law. She collects seaglass at Hampton Beach each summer and I had selected these pieces from her collection to make her the pendant awhile ago.

While the seaglass pendants were drying, they started wire wrapping cute little rocks that I had purchased from another supplier on Etsy. The rocks were from Idaho and were very unique. They were smooth, long, skinny rocks with various markings throughout them, in varying colors. They were perfect for wire wrapping and very lightweight. We tried two different techniques of wrapping and the pendants came out lovely.

Once the ladies were done with the rocks, they switched back to their seaglass and wrapped that pendant. The glue wasn't quite dry, but they worked around it and re-glued anything that had come apart when they were finished wrapping. They seemed quite pleased with their pieces and it was another successful week of classes.

This coming week is the last week of classes in this semester. I can't believe how fast it has gone by. This week is Ladies Choice. They always seem to like this week but it is usually a little crazier for me. They can bring something from home to work on, finish up something that they might not have finished during one of the previous classes, or choose to make something from my website items. It won't be boring, that's for sure, with everyone working on a different project!!

The silver clay pendants were being fired this weekend. I am anxious to see how they came out. Laura's mother in law makes porcelain dolls and has a couple of kiln's. She offered to fire them for us, which was so nice of her. We will just have to polish them up and then dip them in liver of sulphur to basically antique any grooves that we have in our designs. Rudy thinks the glue smells bad - won't she be surprised.... After the dipping and washing afterward, we will attach jump rings and they will be ready to place on a neckchain to wear!! I'll post some pictures in my next article to show how they came out.

We also found out last week that we got approval to hold three more classes before Christmas. We are going to make projects for the Christmas season. I need to get busy once more making the demo's!

It sure keeps me out of trouble.....Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-6206649169694055302009-10-26T12:37:00.006-04:002009-10-26T17:57:02.657-04:00Ladie's Night Out - Week 4 - Working With Silver Clay><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj75n7PEXCXqFlYOxd9F8zT8Pfh_3VvEo9OvG2EDy4SJqtFQKHRiBAx0QEe6RIQktlQiuh6SCzVEmkav-e19cpHUEyISqR6FjhgJubjE4f4IvsrlEPyRM82q54g_MJgmyUHLYMZd_ORnxw/s200/100_1132.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396949692833516802" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 102px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGyzsjmMHk8417G8ree6xDQscbYiIrh789ILmQLJTgnpUIZ9gJfimUCV7qt0cxULgUsYJY_ISO9RMq_i08ioWU1OPV1UL-EtWyVsM5aCq_t4idNx9YkEBIyy8sxyeP1G480k8C01QJ-eY/s200/100_1134.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396949803849367506" /></a

This week was definitely a get focused and down to business class. We were trying to finish up the Kumihimo necklaces from the week before and then move right into working with PMC (Precious Metal Clay) silver clay.

My husband had once again come to my rescue. He repurposed a metal stake of some kind that was lying neglected in our junk draw at home into a hook that he inserted into his work drill that we could use to twist wire for our wire hook and eye clasps to finish off our Kumihimo necklaces! It worked like a charm! The ladies were all curious as to what we would be creating with that large drill – weren’t they pleasantly surprised. It saved us quite a bit of time and really made nice tight wraps on our wire.

After everyone had finished gluing their clasps to their necklaces, and were starting to get a little buzz from the glue…. we moved right in to working with the clay. I had brought them some regular fimo clay to practice with to get their designs down before moving into the expensive silver clay. I had also brought rubber stamps, clay molds, plastic design sheets, various leaves, twigs, pine needles & those little things from our maple tree that we used to call helicopters when we were kids because when they fell from the tree, they would spin to the ground.

I basically could start a small craft shop right in my own home from all the craft projects I have done over the years and all the craft supplies that I have…..

You could see the creative juices flowing as the ladies tried one design after another, trying to get it “JUST RIGHT”. Finally a brave soul opened her clay packet and began rolling out her silver clay. I had ordered the slow dry clay but the pressure was on when we figured out that even the slow dry had only about 15 minutes worth of creating time before it started to dry.

This week they are going to fill in any cracks, sand them smooth, and get them ready to kiln fire this weekend. That is when the much thought out designs will turn from plain white clay to silver masterpieces (at least we hope)!!

We are also making wire wrapped pendants this week with seaglass and shells and also some cute, unique, skinny rocks that I got from a supply place all the way out in Idaho.

Stay tuned!!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-45168523300797749612009-10-18T07:57:00.003-04:002009-10-18T08:46:26.532-04:00Ladies Night Out - Week 3 - Learning KumihimoBoth nights this past week were pretty uneventful. The ladies were in full concentration mode so there was little in the way of joking and very little conversation, especially Wednesday night. Some of the ladies that are repeat class takers already had experience with the Kumihimo disk and the technique, so they just needed a few minutes of review. The other ladies, seeing this for the first time, were a little intimidated and very focused.

We had previously had our first Kumihimo class a few semesters ago using the basic weaving technique with various colors of satin cord. The ladies had loved this class and once they got into the groove with the technique were braiding like mad women. We had also had a previous class using wire with the Kumihimo disk and adding beads. This class - not so much. They are still reliving their horror stories about the uneven braiding, poking wires, and bloody fingers.

This time, they were braiding with beautiful royal blue satin cord for most of the ladies and a few chose two shades of green. Once they had braided for several inches, they had to start adding either blue or green seed beads for a few inches and then continue with the same braid as at the beginning. There were a few "start overs" but basically everyone got the hang of it fairly quickly and were crusing along.

Most of them got to the point of finishing with the seed beads and then were assigned to finish the rest as homework. I did hear from one of the ladies, who shall remain nameless, from the Tuesday night class (you know who you are...) that she didn't remember seeing homework in the syllabus. There is one in every crowd!!!

This week we are finishing the cord off and making our own wired hook and eye clasps and attaching them using Rudy's favorite glue to the ends. Pictures aren't available yet, but I will post them at a later date.

We will then begin working on our next project - PMC silver clay. I can't wait for this project. I haven't even done it myself yet because I have never before had access to a kiln. I do this year through one of my students and I can't wait to try it! We will be working with the clay using various tools, and then forming pendants and either stamping, pressing shapes into them, or whatever inspires them! The pendants will then be allowed to dry and then be fired and finished. We will also be using Liver of Sulphur; and Rudy thinks the glue smells bad... I definitely expect some whining! I can't wait to see the end results.

Stay tuned for the update!!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-89730191209909864632009-10-11T11:16:00.013-04:002009-10-11T12:10:49.964-04:00Ladies Night Out - Week 2 - Crystal Weaving Night<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 198px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyvh-waStxPHwTxao6kF2h39n1dYQBclYCYc1Xh5P3mUwEATZPusatkWlVrbV8q9yUh2-tbEXLmJ22Hf_4NiAjaQocSKl5gfsWB7hAsQzyuoo-odxrAeRORZkC_9OFuTyW11ln33gXkeo/s200/100_1002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391372363673936946" />
The color choices were lovely, the necklaces gorgeous, and I think the ladies enjoyed themselves once they got the technique down. This past week, we made right angle weave pendants on a necklace out of beautiful Swarovski crystal bicones in the ladies choice of colors.

I had taken this class a couple of years ago myself and had created a lovely necklace as a result. I thought this would be a great project to use to teach how to crimp (a very important part of jewelry making) as well as the right angle weave technique. And you can't go wrong using Swarovski crystals in their beautiful colors. They just sparkle in any light and look amazing.

I had the step by step directions, complete with pictures, and thought that it would help putting this necklace together. It took a few attempts in some cases and some re-doing of the stringing so that the pendant could be completed correctly, but the end results were worth it. I could see the light bulbs going off as the ladies realized how the technique worked and from that point, they were off.

Here is a sampling of some of the creations and as you can see from these pictures, they all got a little creative in their color choices and they all came out great! Ellen was the only brave soul to have her picture taken actually wearing her necklace to appear on the blog.

This coming week - Kumihimo braided necklaces with added seed beads!!! Stay tuned!

<img style="cursor:pointer; My adult ed jewelry classes have begun for another semester. We started last Tuesday night. There was such an overwhelming response this time in the registrations that I decided to hold the class for two nights each week - Tuesdays and Wednesdays and both nights were full!! I am so excited and they were so much fun!

Of course, I had ten ladies returning between the two classes, who have taken many classes in the past. It has become like a social event for us - catching up on how the summer was, what jewelry or craft items we have made over the summer, etc. I don't think the new students knew what to think the first night with all of our joking and teasing but by the end of the evening, they were joining in the mix.

One lady, a mother with four teenagers at home, said that she took the class to have a night out with other women. She has made some jewelry on her own before, so her children asked why she was taking the class. She responded that she was self taught and wanted to learn some new techniques plus get out of the house! Of course, they didn't understand, but we did - lol! The jewelry making part is just a perk!!

Our first project is pictured above. They had their choice of gemstones to use, so there was a variety of colors at the end of the session. Some of them also made the matching earrings. Some of them moaned (some of the returnees and some new students) over learning how to make a regular loop with wire and a wrapped loop but were soon getting the hang of it and all of their bracelets came out lovely.

They all left the class trying to decide if they had something in their closets that matched their new bracelet so that they could wear it the next day or did they need to stop at J.C. Penny on the way home to get something new. It was quite a dilemma.

Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8854327120672527940.post-80191158913589944372009-09-13T07:35:00.051-04:002009-09-19T21:30:33.980-04:00RELAXED HOLIDAY SHOPPING??

Are you one of those ambitious types that gets your holiday shopping done way in advance of the Christmas season? I had a mental list prepared as to what I had hoped to get done while on this vacation and as usual haven't completed nearly enough on the list. Oh well... I think I needed the relaxation part.

Last weekend, my husband Mike and I experienced the "empty nest" scenario. My daughter Amanda left on Friday to spend the weekend with my brother Marc and his family in North Carolina. Amanda lives at home with us. We also have two sons, Adam, who is married and lives in Benton, Maine with his wife Amber and our grand-dog Ella, and Chris, who goes to Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

We went with Amanda to Boston to get her to the airport because this was her first trip to North Carolina and only the 2nd airplane trip by herself. After getting her on the plane, we ventured into the tourist section of Boston to walk around Quincy Market and the other interesting shops in that section. We couldn't have asked for better weather and really enjoyed the day.

The next day, we decided to check out coastal Maine and went to the Pemaquid Fort area to see some crafters at a yearly fair that they have at the fort. Again, it was a gorgeous day and the drive along the coast was amazing. I would love to have a place by the ocean!

On Sunday, we got up early and headed over to the driving range owned by my in-laws - A&M Driving Range, right in Winslow. My father in law has been having some health issues and my husband has been helping him out at the range quite a bit this summer. Mike needed to get the weekly mowing done and I went along to drive the golf cart with ball picker upper so that the golfballs wouldn't get eaten up by the mower.

I hadn't driven the golf cart with the ball picker upper (I'm sure that there is a more professional name for it but this describes it better) since last summer, so I needed a short refresher. Mike backed it up for me and all I had to do was get in and take off. I was working on the first 75 yards so that Mike could mow, when my father in law showed up. He seemed surprised but pleased that we were there working so early on a Sunday morning. Mike stopped to talk to him but I kept making my circular swipes picking up golfballs so that Mike could get further along on the mowing before we had customers.

I was starting to feel a little like a Nascar driver behind the wheel of the golf cart and getting a little too cocky when I made a turn and misjudged the width on the ball picker upper and ended up running into the metal screened fencing that my father in law puts up on the outer edges of the range so that the balls won't go into the tall grass on either side. How embarassing!! Of course I had to do it just when the boss shows up....

I stopped the golf cart and then was fumbling around trying to remember how to put it in reverse. Of course, Mike had done that part for me at the beginning.. Just as my father in law was approaching on foot, I remembered that reverse was just under the seat near my calf and put the cart into reverse and away from the fence. My father in law was chuckling as he came up to me. I made some comment about finding it hard to get good help and started on my way again!

He walked around to the wetter sections of the range picking up the balls with a homemade picker upper and tossing them in my section so that I would get them on the next swipe. I've gotten the cart stuck in the wetter sectons in past years, so I've learned to stay away from them. He would look up and smile each time I made a pass thru and I couldn't help but think that my husband was as cute as his dad and he has the same joking nature!

After we started getting customers, we had to stop, but I had managed to get the first 125 yards picked up. The rest of the mowing had to wait until it quieted down again. You can pick up balls with the golf cart because of the screened in protection (it gives the golfers a target), but you can't mow.

My father in law treated us to coffee for Mike and a cappuccino for me and it was another great day! As much fun as it is to drive the golf cart and ball picker upper, I do think I'll stick to jewelry making!!Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03226981869544450950noreply@blogger.com1
